Opposition wiped out: Emperor Sarko rules

Bye bye nationalist, communists, socialists, centrists. It's Sarko time!

These are historic days for France.

Nicolas Sarkozy has received the green light to go ahead with his sweeping reform plans. With up to 80% of the parliament behind him he can do what he likes.

The Socialists of Segolene Royal and Francois Hollande are reduced to bystanders, the Greens are lucky if they get three seats, the far-right National Front is reduced to zero, the Centrists of Francois Bayrou (who only two months ago was a serious presidential contender) will have less than a handful of seats, and the Communists are in so much trouble that they even face bankruptcy.

The only threat to Sarkozy and his team now comes from undemocratic sidelines. Fringe left-wing parties are calling for new battlefields in the workplace, and trade unions (who only represent 6% of the workforce) are sharpening their knives.

France can expect a long hot summer. Let's just hope that Sarkozy sticks to his guns.
