When red can be considered white enough

The Wimbledon dress code is strict – to some degree

French tennis star Tatiana Golovin caused a stir at Wimbledon, when she showed that she wore a pair of shocking red knickers.

The Wimbledon dress code specifies that all players wear white. Ladies usually assume that this also applies to their underwear, which is difficult to hide when they’re leaping into the air while serving.

But the regulations aren’t as strict as they seem. The rules state that players can wear any colour underwear they like provided it is no longer than their shorts or skirt. Miss Golovin’s display did not break the rules because the shorts were shorter than the hem of her dress.

After the match (which she won) the Moscow-born teenager was unrepentant about her choice of underwear. She said: “They say red is the colour that proves that you’re strong and you’re confident, so I’m happy with my red knickers.

The precedent is set. Wimbledon will never be the same again.
