A Romanian film about back-street abortions that swept the top award at the Cannes film festival is to be shown in French high schools after the government dropped opposition.
Cristian Mungiu’s devastating “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days“, about two women sharing the drama of a back-alley abortion and the daily despair of life under communism, won the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival in May.
Three weeks ago, the government advised against plans to show the film in classrooms, arguing it was too “hard” for a school-aged public, but backtracked after the national film classification board declared it suitable for all ages.
Human rights and family planning groups and a filmmakers’ association had accused the government of caving in to pressure from anti-abortion activists.
