Ex-presidential candidate Segolene Royal can’t make up her mind:
A few weeks ago, Paris Match weekly showed Royal swimming with her daughter during a holiday in Corsica. First she tried to stop publication of the weekly, but failed. Then she wanted to sue the magazine for violation of her privacy, and ask “significant damages”. Now she appears to have dropped the charges.
A year ago, exactly the same happened. In the run-up to the election campaign she was photographed in a bikini. At first she threatened to sue the publishers, but then she dropped the charges, apparently because the pictures were actually quite flattering (see left).
What does this mean?
First, Royal is emotional, impulsive, and lacking stamina, which are hardly the qualifications to make her a reliable president. Second, she has made herself even more a target for paparazzi, who can now picture her with virtually guaranteed impunity. Third, France’s privacy laws are in tatters. Just wait for the first pictures of Cecilia Sarkozy in bikini…

Sego can’t stand photographic harassment. At least not this time.
