Updated. This week marks the 10th anniversary of the bi-annual Lorraine Mondial Air Ballons event in the north-east of France.

The event, the largest of its kind in the world, unites one thousand balloonists from 70 countries, and some 400.000 spectators.

If all goes well, the organisers hope to break their own world record from two years ago by launching 350-400 balloons simultaneously in one straight line. (The previous record stands at 261 balloons.)

It’s a costly event, with a price tag of over 2 million euros. But the organisers claim that each invested euro will return five euros in economic benefits for the region.

I trust they haven’t inflated that figure…

Update: The record attempt failed: only 219 balloons took off simultaneously
