Paper Bridge In Southern France

Pretty, eco-friendly but not waterproof:

Japanese architect Shigeru Ban designed a paper bridge which crosses the Gardon River in southern France, near the ancient Roman Pont du Gard.

Shigeru’s cardboard-tube structure is strong enough to carry 20 people at a time. It took 25 French and Japanese architecture students a month to build the bridge from 281 cardboard tubes. The steps are recycled paper and plastic and the foundations wooden boxes packed with sand.

The bridge is open to the public for six weeks. Then it has to be dismantled for the simple reason that by then the very paper-unfriendly rainy season starts…
