Will the British take the train to Paris to buy unlocked iPhones?
Yesterday, the Apple iPhone was launched in the UK and Germany, at exorbitant prices, and locked to a single mobile phone operator.
Later this month, the iPhone will also be launched in France, but French law forces operator Orange to make the iPhone available in an unlocked version.
The British press is wondering whether UK customers shouldn’t wait a little, and buy their iPhone in France, but one analyst believes that Apple can use three tricks to make sure it won’t be an option.
One: the unlocked French iPhone could be so expensive that it’s not worthwhile buying one. Two: the iPhone may support only the French language, so it’s only usable if you are bilingual. Three: Apple could partly lock the iPhone so it works exclusively with one of the three French operators.
