    What a difference five years make

    Architectural Cat and Mouse Game:

    Deputydog shows an interesting diagram depicting the 77 tallest buildings of the old world in 1884 (shown left). At that time, the Washington Monument (the needle in the center background), was the tallest construction, at 169m/555ft.

    Just five years later, the Eiffel Tower was completed, with a height of 300m/984ft. The diagram on the right shows (at the same scale) the incredible difference between the two structures.

    The Eiffel Tower remained the tallest building until 1930, when the Americans took over again, with New York City's Chrysler Building (319m/1,047ft.

    Do a Google Image Search for "tallest buildings diagram" and you'll find the one I used. Not much larger, though.
