It was to be expected.

A smoker in Lyon goes in the record books as the first to be fined for smoking in a café. The police came out in force, with twenty officers, to invade the famous ’203′ bar in Lyon. Although at least forty customers were puffing away, just one got slapped with a 68 euro fine.

After the police had left the premises, everybody lit up again.

The owner of the cafe considers smoking an “artistic and social” experience, and claims that his établissment has become a pilgrim’s destination. By making photographs of filled ashtrays, and selling them on the internet he hopes to finance his fines.
