Say Adieu to “French don’t get fat”

France is putting on weight — one in ten is now obese:

According to a recent study, French from all walks of life and all ages, are putting on weight. Compared to 1981, men have put on 5 kilos (11 lb), and women 4 kilos (8.8 lb) on average.

Obesity has increased from 5% to 10% among men, and from 6% to 10% for women. Northerners are getting fatter than those in the Mediterranean (14% vs 8% obesity), while farmers put on more weight than office workers.

Education also plays a part. Among people without school qualifications, on in eight is obese, against one in twenty of those who went through higher education.

Strangely enough, living standards have different effects on men and women. Poorer women are getting fatter, but poor men are not necessarily the most obese.
