France by Numbers: 19 Billion
The French are text mad: in 2007 they sent no less than 19 billion text messages (known as textos) via their mobile phone. That's an average of 20 messages per user per month. Over eight in ten French possess a cellphone. If that sounds a lot, it's still less than in some other European countries. In Italy, Sweden and the United Kingdom mobile penetration has crossed one hundred percent.
