Booze Map of France

The French attack the bottle with vigour, but some are bigger boozers than others.

Percentage of 15-75 year olds who have been drunk at least once in the past 12 months

A new study looks at the drinking habits of French aged 12-75 across the country. Only one in twelve is a teetotaller; all others admit to enjoying alcohol. The older they get, the more they drink. At the age of 65 or over, two in five drink every day. Under-20-year olds are relatively sober; only one percent are daily drinkers.

The figures differ strongly across the country. Adolescents in Burgundy drink the most, those in the Paris area and far north are the most sober. Boozing is especially on the increase in Brittany, where adolescents drink at least five glasses or more during one day of the month. Adult drinkers live mostly in the south.

A question, what exactly do you call “Adolescents in Burgundy” is it the darker colour of the map? Or a region ?

If there is more older people drinkers in the South its because Retired people tend to emigrate South, their proportions is bigger there but if you’d ask them not as much would be born in the South. I think it s more older people drink more than the younger generation, this has nothing to do with the region they live in.

Britanny is a special case, we (I am Bretonne) are top of that charts for ever… I don’t really know why… Maybe because the weather can be tough there and when you are a farmer or a sailer/fisherman (there is a lot of them there) alcohol keeps you warm. The unemployement level is also high and there is also a lot of older people… This is mainly assumption though…
