How Sarkozy fills his gaping hole

Meet the new French minister for overseas territories:

chritstine kelly.jpgIf the British press can be believed (and they can, can’t they?), 39-year-old Christine Kelly, a glamorous TV presenter, has been lined up by President Nicolas Sarkozy to replace Rachida Dati as the new face of ethnic diversity in France.

It follows his decision to sack Miss Dati, the 43-year-old justice minister and single mother who had been a role model for ethnic minorities. Mrs Kelly is expected to become minister for overseas territories, an especially important role as many of the islands involved are currently suffering severe economic hardship and social unrest. She was born on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, a department of France.

Miss Kelly is as well known for appearing in bikinis as suits. “Mr Sarkozy is hugely impressed that she is not only attractive, but in touch with the modern world,’ said a source in the governing UMP party.

“He is aware that Rachida’s imminent disappearance will create a gaping hole, and is certain that Christine will be the person to fill it.”

Mrs Kelly is currently a presenter on the French news channel LCI – a job she will have to give up if she accepts a role in government. She delined to comment on reports that she will join the cabinet.

Update: The French government categorically denies the appointment. So we can’t trust the Brits after all…
