Goose Power

You may or may not like foie gras, but geese have more to offer: electricity

There’s a new energy revolution in the making in the Dordogne. An experimental farm which breeds and feeds 6,000 geese is working on a prototype installation to produce energy from what comes out of the rear end of the birds.

All goose manure will be collected and processed, and will produce 400 m3 of methane gas per month, continuously feeding a generator with a capacity of 25 kWh. This is not only sufficient to heat the farm’s buildings, but 40% of the electricity is actually sold to EDF, the national electricity provider.

The farm hopes for a return on investment in about six years. The geese themselves will not see any benefits.
