She is slightly schoolmarmish, respects the military, preaches the need to listen to the people, and feels it’s time a woman led France.

Ah, that’ll be Ségolène Royal, you assume, the feminist daughter of an authoritarian army colonel, who has just triumphed over the old men of the French socialist party to become the first woman to get a serious run at becoming president.

Wrong. It’s Michèle Alliot-Marie, the Gaullist French defence minister who, after gritting her teeth for years of being told she had the best legs in the cabinet, is now threatening to take on the male-dominated right…
