What the kcuf: condoms at just 20 cents?

French health minister Xavier Betrand wants the French to quit smoking, but now he offers something else at the tobacconist: cheap condoms

condomStarting December 1, the French government introduces the 20-cent condom, available at tobacconists and newsstands.

The discount condoms are part of the fight against Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases. They follow an earlier (successful) test, in which condoms were made available at the same low price in high schools. In just one year, over 120,000 condoms were sold at French schools.

The campaign is launched under the very French slogan “Make Love“.

At a price of 20 euro-cents, a government-sponsored condom costs about a quarter of a commercially available product. No doubt companies like Durex aren’t too happy about this project.

But then again, the government probably doesn’t give a kcuf…
