Paris before the tourists came

The origins of Paris go back over two thousand years, when the town was called Lutetia.

The French Ministry of Culture and Communication has opened a wonderful website, “Paris, a Roman City“, which lets you discover daily life in the town that became Paris in the year 212.

A one-hour tour of modern Paris walks you through the Roman city of Lutetia, traces of which are still visible. And, fairly unique for an official French website, it’s all in English.
