There’s room for everyone — but at a price

Dying in Paris is nearly as expensive as living — at least if you compare the prices per square meter for apartments and graves.

Especially a “perpetual” grave is costly — nearly 5.500 euros per square meter. That’s why more and more people go for cheaper 10-year graves, which can be extended if required.

Like in the real estate business, the closer you go to the center, the more you pay. Some cemeteries are already saturated, but there’s still enough capacity if you look a bit further. One specialist, who buries 9,500 bodies a year, claims he has capacity for 20,000.

Still, he doesn’t like selling graves to the living. “We give priority to the dead. Others are put on a waiting list,” he says.
