Breathless

Only two men on the planet can stay under water for more than ten minutes without prior breathing of pure oxygen.

Six months ago, Frenchman Stéphane Mifsud lost his previous record to German free diver Tom Sietas, who set the unprecedented time of 10 minutes and 12 seconds. Coming June 8, Mifsud will try to become number one again.

Static apnea (that’s the official term) is so dangerous that the body can handle it no more than once or twice per year. Milfsud has only made two record attempts in his entire life. Most of his training consists of running, bodybuilding and physiotherapy, which give him the flexible thorax and impeccable heart condition he needs. His lung capacity is eleven liters, twice as large as normal.

And he doesn’t smoke.
