Prison population close to new record
On 1 May, no less than 63,645 people were behind bars in France. That’s just seven prisoners shy of the absolute July 2004 record of 63,652. According to French law, each prisoner is entitled to a private cell, but in reality there are only 50,631 places available.
French justice minster Rachida Dati acknowledges the shortfall, but doesn’t believe the problem is too big because “many prisoners don’t like to be alone in a cell”.
She should know — two of her brothers are serving time behind bars.
